Honor Flight Network Offers Free Flights for American Veterans

Updated: 22 July 2013 03:10:41 AM

The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization whose sole purpose to honor the sacrifices made by our American Veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 640 WWII veterans die each day, many have never seen their own memorial in Washington, DC.

The first Honor Flight occurred in May 2005 when six small plans flew out of Springfield, Ohio to take twelve WWII veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, DC.

By August 2005 the waiting list of veterans was so long they were forced to switch over to commercial airline carriers in order to accommodate as many veterans as possible.

This is when they partnered with HonorAir in Hendersonville, NC and "Honor Flight Network" was formed.

Earl Morse

Earl Morse, a physician assistant and Retired Air Force Captain who wanted to honor the veterans he had cared for over 27 years, conceived the Honor Flight Network program.

After asking many of the WWII veterans about visiting their memorial in Washington, DC and he was saddened to hear they would try but many felt the only way they would make it there would be with a family member or friend.

In December 2004 Earl asked one of his World War II veteran patients if he could personally fly him to DC free of charge to visit the memorial and he graciously accepted the offer.

Earl soon realized there were many veterans who had dreams of visiting the memorial but believed they may never make it.

Earl went to an aero club and addressed 150 members and presented the program and the rest is history.

Through the end of 2012, Honor Flight Network has transported more than 98,500 veterans to Washington, DC to see their memorial.

Go to the Honor Flight Network website to read the entire story about this generous non-profit organization and while you are reading about it, take some time to make a generous donation to help honor our veterans and make their dreams of visiting their memorial come true.
